Postsocialist city has to struggle with the heirloom which was left by the former regime. Although the quality of life has changed significantly, there are still some visible ‘monuments of communism’ – block estates, which are inevitable part of a postsocialist cities’ landscape. What are the major problems of its inhabitants? How do they cope with them? The article presents the issues in context of Poland, where the problem of socialist urban architecture remains unsolved and is still a matter of public discussion. It analyses the social dimension of living in described housing estates – problem of anonymity, lack of greenery, and presents housing estates as a space open for creativity.
